Bison Best Bonnies in Non-Conference Finale

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team fell to Howard, 76-64, on the road Saturday afternoon.

Aaliyah Parker paced the Bonnies with 17 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Mackenzie Pettinelli finished with nine points while Laycee Drake and Brianna Barr-Buday chipped in eight points apiece.

Parker and Pettinelli combined for nine of the first 11 points for the Brown and White, taking an early 11-6 lead over the Bison at the media timeout.

The Bison (10-5), however, ended the first on a 7-2 run to pull even at 15-15 as the first quarter horn sounded.

The Bonnies (9-4, 0-1 A-10) were able to retake the lead in the second as Parker and Mallory Heise converted on back-to-back possessions to put the Brown and White on top 21-16.

Howard battled back to take a 32-29 lead before Elyse MacDonough's 3-pointer to quickly tie the game at 32-32.

A 6-0 run for the hosts saw then take their biggest lead of the game into halftime, 38-32.

Coming out the break, the Bonnies opened the third on a 17-2 run to retake the lead, 49-40.

The Bison battled back in the latter half of the third with an 8-0 spurt of the own to pull within one, 51-50.

Howard's 14-0 run between the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth proved to be the difference in Saturday's game as the Bison lead grew to 68-55.

The Bonnies were able to cut the deficit back to single digits on a Mallory Heise jump shot, but the Howard converted a three-point play on the following possession to push its lead back to double digits.

The Bison converted a pair at the free throw line with under 20 seconds to play to put the game out of reach for good.

GAME NOTES

  • The Bonnies finished the game shooting 27-for-63 (42.9 percent) from the floor while Howard shot 24-for-54 (44.4 percent) from the field.
  • Bona's won the battle in the paint, outscoring the Bison, 36-28.
  • The Brown and White nabbed 12 steals Saturday, the second-highest mark of the season.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JIM CROWLEY
"Credit to Howard. This was a really hard fought college basketball. I was really proud of our group. We had a shooting lull late in the third and into the fourth that allowed Howard to get some transition and we gave up a few offensive rebounds. I thought our kids played really hard and this is a really good opportunity for us to learn and prepare for Atlantic 10 play."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies are back in action on New Year's Eve when they return home to host George Washington. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Reilly Center.
