Women's Lacrosse Dominates Canisius, 18-6

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Nine different Bonnies found the back of the net in a dominating performance as the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team scored an 18-6 victory over rival Canisius Wednesday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.

Junior Rylee Gonzalez led the way with a game-high seven points (2G-5A) while both senior Tori Nascimento (3G-2A) and junior Brooke Piper tallied five points apiece with Piper posting a team-best five goals.

Other Bonnies standouts included Grace Hollenbeck (3G-1A-4P) along with Fiona McGovern and Megan Schillinger who each scored a goal with an assist.

Schillinger set up much of the offense with a dominant day on the draw, setting a new program record with 12 draw controls.

Sophomore Katelyn Hicks was outstanding in the cage, making 12 saves to earn the victory.

The Bonnies (1-1) got off to a dominating start, winning the opening draw and scoring on the first possession of the game as Tori Nascimento found the net for an early lead.

That set the tone for the entire first quarter as the Bonnies ran out to a 6-1 advantage after the opening 15 minutes.

Nascimento scored her second of the game at the 6:17 mark of the first and Hollenbeck joined the party with a goal 2:28 before the end of the period, but Canisius would put the breaks on the Bonnies offense for a bit.

St. Bonaventure had a scoring drought of nearly an entire quarter as the Griffs closed back within 6-3 before Piper scored on the extra-man opportunity to end the Canisius run.

Canisius got back within 7-4 on a man-up goal of their own, but Fiona McGovern buried a free position opportunity just 29 seconds before the halftime buzzer for an 8-4 lead at intermission.

Bona ran with that momentum out of the locker room as Hollenbeck scored again off an assist from Schillinger just over a minute into the third, followed by two back-to-back tallies from Piper and Nascimento to extend the lead to 11-4 with 9:10 left in the quarter.

From there, the Bonnies never looked back.

Sidney Van Tassel recorded her first career goal while Brit Colangelo scored and scooped up two groundballs. Reagan Diehl also found the net for a score.

SBU led in nearly every statistical category including shots (33-27), draw controls (19-9) and groundballs (14-12) while being successful on all but one clear attempt (16-17).

With the win, the Bonnies snapped what was a nine-game losing skid against their Little Three rival Canisius. Bona's last win in the series came on home turf in 2009.

Hailey Rooney was the only Griffs player to post multiple points, scoring two goals.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH LEIGHANN STAUFFER
"That was a great bounce back game and win for us. It doesn't get much better than that against a rival. We controlled the game from the first whistle and never took our foot off the gas. We were a family out there today and I couldn't be more proud of everyone in our program."
