MURFREESBORO, Tenn. –
Paul Vossen set a new program record for stolen bases in a game as the St. Bonaventure baseball team raced past UT Martin to complete a three-game round robin sweep at Middle Tennessee this weekend with a 13-6 victory over the Skyhawks Sunday night.
St. Bonaventure (7-3) scored a run in three of the opening four innings, but trailed 4-3 after the first four frames.
Bona turned the tide with a five-run fifth.
Vossen and
Conner Vercollone registered run-scoring singles before
Jayce Tharnish plated two more with a two-out hit to left. One batter later,
Chris Hoalcraft brought in two runs with his two-bagger to center for an 8-4 advantage.
From there, the Bonnies played tack-on.
Vossen walked, then stole second and third and came home on a single through the right side by
David Marshall Jr. in the seventh that also scored a second run as a Skyhawks error paved the way for Hoalcraft to come in with the lead moving to 10-4.
The Bonnies added two more in the seventh for a 12-4 cushion and held on late.
The Skyhawks (4-6) threatened in the eighth with a run home and the bases loaded before
Luke Roggenburk closed the door in relief.
As a team, the Bonnies blistered the basepaths all night.
Vossen swiped an astounding seven bases – not only good for the St. Bonaventure single-game record, but also a total that stands just one off the NCAA Division I record of eight. He was perfect in his stolen base attempts, 7-for-7.
The Nevada native recorded the most stolen bases in a game by any Division I player since 2001 when Bobby Kingsbury of Fordham tied the national record set by King Lewis of Bethune-Cookman in 1994.
Bona's previous record of five stolen bases in a game stood since 1992 when Glenn Hamel set that mark in a game against Davis & Elkins.
It wasn't just Vossen making noise on the bases, though. SBU finished with an eye-popping 15 stolen bases. Tharnish swiped four while
Mike Gunning had three and Hoalcraft one.
Tharnish again set the tone in the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs and his four stolen bases. Vossen had two hits and scored four runs in addition to his record-setting night stealing bags.
Vercollone recorded two hits and two RBIs as well.
Chance Moore made his first start of the season and pitched well, working three innings while allowing only one earned run on two hits.
Kade Walker followed and picked up the win with two innings. The senior southpaw did not allow an earned run.
Gabe Watts (2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) and Roggenburk (1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) finished up the win.
