TAMPA, Fla. – Junior
Megan Schillinger recorded eight draw controls to set a new single-season program record in the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team's non-conference finale Sunday afternoon at South Florida. Despite leading on the draw over the Bulls, USF dominated on the scoreboard, 19-5.
Schillinger's last draw control of the day gave her 69 on the season, breaking the previous record of 68 set last year by
Brooke Piper.
Tori Nascimento and
Grace Hollenbeck tallied two goals apiece for the Bonnies, and SBU's season leader in goals, Piper added one to reach 24 on the year. Â
St. Bonaventure and USF went blow for blow in the opening frame, but a 7-1 scoring run from the Bulls in the second quarter stunned the visiting Bonnies. Bona's previous two losses on the season were by just one goal apiece.Â
USF (4-2) went to work early, quickly getting on the board in the first quarter.
Bona's (4-3) responded promptly on a man-up opportunity as
Fiona McGovern threaded a pass to Hollenbeck who converted the goal, knotting the score at one.
Maggie Newton regained the lead for the Bulls, capitalizing on a failed clear from the Bonnies, but back-to-back goals from Nascimento and Piper gave Bona's a one-goal advantage.
A quick response from USF 12 seconds later left the score tied at three after 15 minutes of play.
An offensively stagnant second quarter from the Bonnies allowed the Bulls to pull away, taking a 10-4 lead into the intermission.
Nascimento scored the lone goal of the second frame for the Bonnies with 55 seconds on the clock.
The Bulls ended the game on a 9-1 run. Hollenbeck netted her second goal of the day with 2:36 remaining in the fourth.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH LEIGHANN STAUFFER
"This definitely wasn't our best game. We knew they were a good team going into it, but I think we lost sight of doing the little things along the way. Our goal as a staff was to have the girls gain experience playing a team like that and in an environment like that, and I believe it will pay off in conference play."
