Fourth Quarter Surge Lifts Spiders over Bonnies, 13-9

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team went blow-for-blow with Richmond for three quarters but fell short on a cold and windy Saturday at the Marra Athletics Complex, 13-9.

Brooke Piper, Grace Hollenbeck, and Tori Nascimento all recorded hat tricks for the Bonnies, while sophomore goalie Katelyn Hicks made a career-high 15 saves.

Senior Fiona McGovern assisted on five of Bona's nine goals, bringing her career total to 76, which is third all-time in program history. She also moved into fourth on the Bonnies all-time points leaderboard with 184, passing Laura Spaulding, '04.

In the first quarter, the Bonnies and the Spiders both scored five goals. Bona's (6-4, 2-1 A-10) struck first as Hollenbeck netted a pass from McGovern.

Piper added another Bonnies goal at the 11:47 mark after Keating Hopkins got the Spiders on the board a minute earlier.

Richmond (5-5, 3-1 A-10) took the lead with 10 minutes to play in the quarter thanks to goals from Colleen Quinn and Bridget Lonsinger.

Hollenbeck scored another for the Bonnies to tie the game at three off another feed from McGovern. The Spiders swiftly responded to take a two-goal lead, but the Bonnies struck back with goals from Nascimento and Piper to even the score at five as the first quarter came to a close.

The second quarter was another evenly matched 15 minutes between Richmond and St. Bonaventure. Hollenbeck completed her hat trick with 6:13 on the clock answering a goal from the Spiders a minute earlier. McGovern again assisted Hollenbeck on the goal to record her fourth helper of the game.

Richmond took an 8-6 lead with 2:16 remaining before the halftime break, but the Bonnies found some momentum with Nascimento scoring twice, both off assists from Piper.

The second half was a defensive battle between the two Atlantic 10 foes. Hicks made seven saves in the third quarter to keep the Bonnies tied with the Spiders at nine after 45 minutes of play.

Piper completed her hat trick for Bona's lone goal of the third quarter.

Four goals in the fourth quarter from Richmond was the difference as they secured a 13-9 win over the Bonnies.

The Bona's defense stood tall for the first nine minutes of the final stanza causing multiple Richmond turnovers, but they couldn't find the offensive momentum to break the deadlock.

Brit Colangelo recorded three caused turnovers and four groundballs for the Brown and White.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH LEIGHANN STAUFFER
"This game was a game of minutes. We played well for 56 minutes of the game. The four minutes that held us back is what we are going to focus on leading up to Duquesne. We're hoping to see them again at the Atlantic 10 Tournament."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies are on the road for a pair of A-10 contests next week. They start with midweek action at Duquesne Wednesday and meet VCU Saturday in Richmond, Va.
