AMHERST, Mass. – Nationally-ranked Massachusetts proved too much on Saturday afternoon with a 15-4 win over the St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse team at Garber Field.
No. 20 UMass built a 7-1 lead at halftime, holding the Bonnies off the scoreboard until the 13:49 mark of the second quarter when Chris Lawrence scored his first career collegiate goal off an assist from John Boomer.
The Minutemen built their lead out to 9-1 before Drew Kenney connected with Chase Perryman for Bona's second score.
The Bonnies (5-9, 0-3 A-10) would get no closer, however. Cole Kucinski recorded a goal and an assist in the fourth quarter while Patrick Shanahan also tallied a Bona goal.
Lad Harper won nine faceoffs with four groundballs and Isaac Farmer made eight saves in net.
Aiden Drunsic delivered a game-high four goals with Robbie Granara scoring five points (3G-2A) for UMass (9-3, 2-1).
St. Bonaventure is back in action next Saturday at Hobart. Faceoff time is slated for 2 p.m. in Geneva, N.Y.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH RANDY MEARNS
"Untimely mistakes hurt and they definitely hurt us today. Hats off to Coach Canella and UMass; they capitalized on a number of self-inflicted errors. To compete in the Atlantic 10, we have to minimize those mistakes. We play with heart and grit, but we have to learn how to play clean for the full 60 minutes. Today provided more learning experiences for our young group. We'll take it all in, get better and get ready for Hobart and try to keep our A-10 playoff hopes alive."
