BUFFALO – Canisius cracked four home runs to take a 17-4 victory in midweek action over the St. Bonaventure baseball team Tuesday afternoon.
Bona grabbed a run in the first as Jayce Tharnish singled to lead off, stole second and later scored on a fielding error.
Canisius (9-23) responded with four runs on just two hits in the home half of the first – Thomas Zwirecki plated two with a double and Justin Bremner followed with a two-run homer to account for the scoring.
The Bonnies (12-24) got two back in the second – Tharnish tripled home a run before scoring on a single from David Marshall Jr. to pull back within 4-3.
Zwirecki struck again in the third, however, with a thundering homer to extend the Canisius lead back to three. Later in the frame, Mason Cisco broke the game open with a grand slam for an 11-3 cushion.
From there, the Griffs never looked back, implementing the run-rule with another grand slam courtesy of Eric Weeks in the eighth.
Tharnish posted four of Bona's six hits on the day including a stolen base. Gavin Constantine also got on base three times via free passes and stole a base as well.
Ethan Catney-Forbes had the standout performance for the Bonnies on the hill with two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.
St. Bonaventure returns home to begin a three-game Atlantic 10 series Friday afternoon vs. Davidson.
