ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team allowed just two hits as strong pitching led the Bonnies to a 6-2 win over Davidson at Handler Park Saturday afternoon.
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Bonaventure put its first run on the board.
Chris Hoalcraft took the first pitch he saw and sent it well over the left-center fence, marking his third home run on the season.
In his next at-bat in the third inning, Hoalcraft struck again for the Bonnies.
With the bases loaded and one out, Hoalcraft sent a single to left field that brought Gavin Constantine and Jayce Tharnish to the plate. After three innings, Bonaventure held a 3-0 lead.
Davidson brought home their first run in the fourth.
With the bases loaded and one out, the Wildcats hit into a fielder's choice that plated one. The next batter for Davidson fouled out to third base to end the threat.
Bonaventure extended its lead in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the fifth, Hoalcraft collected his third hit on the day with a double down the left field line. In the next at-bat, Harrison Kaufman brought him home on an RBI single to left field.
In the sixth, the Bonnies plated two more with a fielder's choice from Constantine and a sacrifice fly from David Marshall.
Davidson added a run in the eighth but were unable to create a rally.
The Bonnies' pitching staff was outstanding on the day.
Alex Barger started the game, allowing one earned run through 3.1 innings while racking up a career-high seven strikeouts.
David James picked up the win in relief, pitching the remaining 5.2 innings while striking out a season-high seven without allowing a hit. James needed just 68 pitches, 48 of which were strikes.
Game three of the series is set from Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
