ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team came up just short Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex, falling to Davidson, 10-8.
Â
Prior to the contest, the Bonnies honored their eight graduating seniors:
Brooke Cicoria,
Alexys Oechsle,
Fiona McGovern,
Katelyn Rokitka,
Grace Burns,
Chloe Szot,
Mackenzie Herbst, and
Tori Nascimento.
Â
The Bonnies (8-5, 4-2 A-10) took a two-goal lead into halftime but were outscored 6-2 in the second half, leading to a 10-8 loss at the hands of the Wildcats.
Â
Nascimento led the charge offensively for the Brown and White with three goals, while McGovern added three assists. Cicoria contributed three caused turnovers and three groundballs defensively for the Bonnies.
Â
Davidson (9-3, 5-1 A-10) took a two-goal lead in the first four minutes of action, but the Bonnies responded with the next three goals of the opening stanza to take a 3-2 lead.
Â
Nascimento, McGovern, and
Sidney Van Tassel recorded the first three goals for Bona's in response to two opening goals from Davidson's Josie Lambert.
Â
Jenna Skibbe took advantage of an extra man opportunity to open the second quarter to tie the game at three.
Â
Grace Hollenbeck and
Brooke Piper combined for the next two goals to extend Bona's lead back to two with 4:29 to play in the second quarter.
Â
Skibbe got one back for the Wildcats, but Nascimento ended the first half with a score, spinning around two Davidson defenders.
Â
Bona's sophomore goalie
Katelyn Hicks was outstanding in the first 30 minutes of action, making five saves.
Â
Coming out of the break, Davidson netted two goals to knot the score at six.
Â
McGovern tallied her fourth point of the day, assisting on Piper's second goal.
Â
Davidson took the momentum going into the final 15 minutes of play, scoring twice to end the third quarter and take an 8-7 lead.
Â
An offsides penalty on Davidson allowed the Bonnies to start the final quarter on a power play. Van Tassel earned a free position opportunity less than 30 seconds into the quarter, but Davidson goalie Kayla Joyce saved Van Tassel's shot. However, the Davidson clear failed, and led to a free position goal from Nascimento, tying the game at eight with 13:42 to play.
Â
The Bonnies won the following draw, but Joyce made another save to keep the game tied at eight. The Wildcats capitalized on the defensive stop with a goal from Skibbe to take a 9-8 lead.
Â
Davidson posted multiple defensive stops after taking a one-goal lead, including fending off a power play opportunity from the Bonnies.
Â
Adrienne Leone sealed the win for the Wildcats with a goal at the 1:36 mark, making it 10-8 in favor of Davidson.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH LEIGHANN STAUFFER
"I think our defense played solid. Hicks played a phenomenal game in the cage. We let a couple of cutters slip by us for a one on none on her, but I think we made the right adjustments. I think offensively, we were getting shots off. We were getting looks. Their goalie is a great goalie, but we definitely have to capitalize in those situations"
Â
"Today we were fourth in the standing, and they were third, so I think that score evenly matches up with where we stand in the A-10, so, depending on what happens, hopefully we see them again."
UP NEXTÂ
The Bonnies stay at home for a midweek matchup with George Mason Wednesday. Opening draw is set for 12:00 p.m.
