ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team lost a heartbreaker on Senior Day, dropping the final game of three-game series against the Massachusetts, 9-8, Sunday afternoon at Handler Park.
UMass led off the game with a run in the first inning.
After loading the bases with no outs, Bonnies' pitcher Kade Walker induced a double play that brought home a run for the Minutemen. Walker struck out the next batter, escaping the jam.
Bonaventure took the lead in the bottom of the inning.
After a single from David Marshall, Harrison Kaufman doubled over the left fielder's head. Marshall came into score on an error on the play. In the next at-bat, Kaufman came in the score on a sacrifice fly from Mike Gunning, giving the Bonnies a 2-1 advantage.
Bona continued their rally in the next inning.
After back-to-back walks by Jack Pawlowicz and Ryan Davis, Paul Vossen drove in one with a single through the right side. After Marshall loaded the bases with a single, Kaufman got hit with a pitch to drive in the Bonnies' fourth run of the game.
UMass tied the game in the top of the third.
Two singles with one out in the inning set the stage for Carter Hanson, who snuck a home run just inside the right field foul pole for a three-run home run.
Senior designated hitter Ryan Davis gave the Bonnies a lead again in the fourth. With two on and two out, Davis ripped a single through the middle of the infield, bringing both runners in to score.
Bonaventure kept the offense rolling in the fourth.
Base hits from Robert Mannino and Morgan Little each brought in a run, making it an 8-4 Bonnies advantage.
UMass scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings, cutting the lead to 8-6.
In the top of the ninth, UMass tied the game.
After a leadoff single, Minutemen second basemen Anthony Tirado blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to tie the game at eight. Later in the inning, the Minutemen took the lead on a sacrifice fly.
The Bonnies attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth.
With two outs, Antonio Cordeiro drew a walk and Ryan Davis drove a single to right field to move Cordeiro to third. Jayce Tharnish came up with the opportunity to tie or win the game but was unable to put the ball in play.
Kade Walker got the start on the mound for the Bonnies. In four innings Walker recorded six strikeouts, five of which were looking, and allowed only four hits. Luke Roggenburk came in to throw four innings of relief. Gilbert Saunders III came in and got three outs in the ninth.
