DAYTON, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure University baseball team secured its third straight Atlantic 10 series win with an 11-4 victory over Dayton on the road Friday afternoon.
The Bonnies jumped out to a 1-0 in the top of the first when Chris Hoalcraft reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Jayce Tharnish to cross home.
Bona's extended the lead to 3-0 in the second with an RBI base hit off the bat of Robert Mannino and a bases loaded walk from David Marshall Jr.
Mike Gunning made it a four-run game in the third with a no-doubt solo home run to left field.
The Flyers, however, were quick to answer with a solo home run of their own to lead off the bottom of the third.
Gabe Watts was the game two starter for the Bonnies, pitching 4.0 innings and striking out three. Watts capped off his day by escaping a bases loaded jam unscathed in the fourth.
Tharnish tacked on an insurance run in the top half of the seventh, belting a solo home run to centerfield and giving the Bonnies a 5-1 advantage.
Gunning stayed hot at the plate with an RBI single in the seventh and Antonio Cordeiro followed him up with a two-run double to center, pushing the Bonnies lead to 8-1.
The Flyers pulled one back in the bottom of the seventh on a double steal attempt.
A two-run home run off the bat of Michael DiMartini in the eighth cut the Bonnies lead to 8-4.
The Bonnies pushed the lead to 11-4 in the top of the ninth, scoring a pair of runs on an error and then tacking on a third run in the frame with an RBI single.
Gilbert Saunders was credited with the win on the mound, tossing three innings in relief to improve to 4-0 on the year. Luke Roggenburk worked the final two innings, securing the victory.
Gunning finished the day with three hits to pace the Bonnies while Cordeiro and Tharnish collected two hits each.
