ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – A pair of St. Bonaventure baseball players have earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors as senior David Marshall Jr. and redshirt sophomore Jayce Tharnish each received selection to the A-10 Second Team.
Marshall becomes a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference honoree, registering the accolades from his second position on the diamond.
A year after being named Second Team All-A-10 at shortstop, he put together another all-conference season after switching to second base this year.
Marshall started all 49 games during the season, hitting .342 with eight home runs and 45 RBIs. He recorded a .404 on-base percentage and was steady defensively with a .976 fielding percentage, committing just five errors on the season while helping to turn 14 double plays.
The Downers Grove, Ill. native was at his best in conference play as he hit .377 with six homers and 33 RBIs including a 1.002 OPS against A-10 pitching. In a game against VCU earlier this spring, he tied the program's single-game hits record with six after also having a five-hit game previously during the year.
Marshall also matched Bona's season A-10 RBIs record, equaling the 2006 mark set by SBU Hall of Famer Joe Rizzo while his A-10 batting average ties for eighth in program history and best in over a decade – along with his all-conference teammate.
Tharnish turned in one of the top seasons by a Bonnie in recent memory as he hit .403 with seven home runs, 59 runs scored and 29 RBIs. He also finished the year with a .461 on-base percentage and was always a threat on the base paths with 32 stolen bases in 33 attempts.
The team's everyday centerfielder, he ranked third among all A-10 hitters in average this year, behind only Michael DiMartini of Dayton (.412) and James Quinn-Irons of George Mason (.411). His 79 hits were sixth among all A-10 players while he was also fifth in stolen bases.
Nationally, Tharnish stands 17th in batting average, ninth in hits per game, 33rd in runs per game and 26th overall in stolen bases and his five leadoff home runs during the year entered the last week of the regular season tying for the national lead.
The Devon, Pa. native becomes just the seventh Bonnies player to hit .400 or better for an entire season and the first since Jason Radwan did so in 2013. He jumps to second all-time in Bonnies single-season hits, tying the 2010 campaign by Jesse Bosnik, and his stolen base total will stand tied for third in Bona history and the most since Randy Moley had the same total in 2008. His 59 runs scored are also the second-most in Bonnies single-season history.Â
Tharnish's 26 multi-hit games on the season also rank as the most by a Bonnies player since 1995.
