Women's Soccer Picks Up Senior Day Shutout Win Over Oakland

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team collected its second consecutive shutout victory at the Marra Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon, taking down Oakland by a score of 2-0 and adding a nice final touch to the program's Senior Day.

The Bonnies (3-3-2) grabbed an early advantage in the ninth minute courtesy of graduate student Giovanna Coghetto.

A Bonaventure free kick found the head of fellow graduate Paula Sanabria Diaz, who sent a precise pass over to Coghetto. The team's leading scorer was then able to quickly tuck in a shot, boosting her season point total to 11 (5G-1A).

Over 60 minutes of game time would then pass before either team returned to the scoring column. In the meantime, the Bonnies would defend the lead before increasing their advantage in the 77th minute.

As a corner kick approached the box, freshman Jolie Bull rose up to make first contact and redirected the cross. The ball ricocheted into traffic where sophomore Hannah Lindenberger was able finish the job, notching her second goal of the season.

Oakland (1-5-2) prodded at the Bona defense all game long, but the hosts were reluctant to give up any opportunities.

Senior goalkeeper Jael Schubert got the starting nod and made two saves, recording her second shutout half this season and picking up the win. She was replaced at halftime by sophomore Adelaide Paredes, who tallied three saves including a point-blank stop in the 60th minute to keep the Bonnies up by one.

Though the teams shared an even ratio with five shots on goal each, only the Bonnies were able to capitalize. The win marked the first time since 2013 that the program has enjoyed back-to-back shutout victories coupled with Thursday's 1-0 blanking of LIU.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MELISSA SHERWOOD
"Defending takes all of us. It's a team effort. It's cliché, but we start from the front. That was good to see in terms of organization and the team being able to adapt. It's pleasing to get the clean sheet, especially to get back-to-back clean sheets because we aren't naïve. We know that when we get into the A-10 conference, we're going to do more defending than attacking, and so that's something that's going to be really important."
