Early Score Sets Bonnies Back At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early goal on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-0 on the road at Rhode Island under rainy skies.

The Rams (6-4-4, 4-1-1 A10) took control of the contest in the early going, peppering freshman goalkeeper Callie Turpin with a flurry of shots which she handled to keep things scoreless for the time being.

Though the Bonnies (3-9-1, 0-6-0) looked for attacking opportunities of their own, the hosts held onto the majority of possession, eventually capitalizing in the 19th minute as Lily Camacho headed a corner kick past Turpin and into the back of the net.

The Bonnies found what looked to be an answer just three minutes later on a corner kick of their own, though the score was taken off the board after a handball judgment by the officials.

Turpin made a handful of impressive saves down the stretch in the first half to limit the Rams' advantage to one goal.

With just three minutes to play in the first stanza, freshman Moran Moscovici sent a through ball the way of redshirt junior Audrey Cadman, but a Rhode Island defender thwarted the visitors' promising chance, sending the pass back the other way.

Coming out of the midway break, the contest continued in a similar manner with the hosts controlling possession and pace.

Two Bona chances in the second half fell short of knotting the contest at one goal apiece. A breakaway by sophomore Ava Reybitz in the 68th minute was defended by the Rams at the last second and in the 72nd minute, graduate student Emily Neenan found shooting space but sent the attempt over the crossbar.

Rhode Island delivered a final blow in the 85th minute, extending its lead to two goals and effectively closing the book on a comeback opportunity for SBU.

Turpin made her seventh start of the season, playing the full 90 minutes and making nine total saves.
