CHICAGO - An opportunity to tie inside of three minutes left to play was turned away, leaving the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team to suffer a 2-1 heartbreaker on the road at Loyola Chicago Saturday afternoon.
The Bonnies (5-4-4, 2-1-2 A10) offense started off with a chance in the third minute. Callum Shillington received a pass at the top of the penalty box and found enough space to rifle off a shot that required the Ramblers goalkeeper to make a difficult diving save. Â
Loyola Chicago (7-5-3, 2-3-1 A10) opened the scoring shortly after in the 10th minute when Mateusz Drazek received a crosser pass in the penalty box and found the back of the net. Â
Another opportunity for Bona to score came in the 16th minute. Brendan Sheehan pushed the ball up the wing and delivered a pass that found Neshawn Sutherland near the far post. A Rambler defender blocked the pass from getting to Sutherland and kept the Bonnies scoreless. Â
The offense continued to provide chances to level the scoring late in the first half. Sheehan fired off a couple of shots in the 30th minute that had a chance to go in, however none of them were able to find the back of the net.Â
Loyola Chicago came out of halftime with a flurry of chances. The hosts soon found the breakthrough in the 64th minute from a goal by Petar Janjic. Â
St. Bonaventure had a chance to get one back in the 73rd minute. A crossing pass found Ryan Holt in the middle of the box with a defender covering tightly. Holt was able to head it toward goal, but the effort fell short of the net. Â
In the 82nd minute, Jack Steel lifted the ball into a crowd into the box and, after some deflections, it found Kyle Macfarlane who was able to put a foot on the ball and chip it into the back of the net to bring one back on the scoreboard for the Bonnies.
Holt had a great chance to tie the game late with a shot on goal in the 88th minute following a one-on-one rocket, but a heroic save by the Ramblers keeper would slam the door shut for a Bonaventure comeback. Â
