Bonnies Come Up Short in Pair of Games in South Carolina

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped a pair of games to UNCW and UMBC Friday at the Wofford Invitational.

The Bonnies fell in game one to the Seahawks, 3-1, before a 7-0 loss at the hands of UMBC in game two.

Game 1 – UNCW 3, St. Bonaventure 1
UNCW put runners on second and third in the top of the first, but Mackenzie Frani was able to work out of the jam to keep the Seahawks off the board early.

The Seahawks were able to get on the board first in game one Friday, scoring on a single off the bat of Emily Whitwell in the top of the third.

The Bonnies were quick to tie the game back up, however, when Eleanor Park belted a solo home run in the bottom half of the third.

Ava Brookshire gave the Seahawks the lead back in the top of the fifth when she singled home a pair of runs for a 3-1 advantage.

UNCW would hold on to the lead over the next two innings to secure the win.

Kendall Stull and Sydney DeGram also registered hits for the Bonnies.

Frani scattered seven hits across five innings of work while striking out one. Ava Lomelin worked the final two innings in relief, allowing just one hit.

Game 2 – UMBC 7, St. Bonaventure 0
The Retrievers were able to load the bases in the bottom of the second in game two Friday.

UMBC grabbed the first lead of the game after Sophie Anderson reached on an error, allowing Taylor Nicholson to cross home for a 1-0 lead.

The Bonnies got out of the jam without anymore damage, keeping it at a one-run game.

The Retrievers pushed their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third when Kenzie Nicholson crossed home on a double play.

UMBC tacked on four insurance runs in the fourth, scoring on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly. The Retrievers made it a 7-0 game in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Grace Miller, Annabel Burke and Stull collected hits for the Bonnies.

In the circle, Stull struck out a pair across four innings of work while Ava Lomelin and Jayden Szkatulski each worked an inning in relief.

The Bonnies are back in action Saturday afternoon when they take on UNCW at 12:30 p.m.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH CAMDEN DECKER
"I'm continuing to see improvement and flashes from this team. I told them that we're disappointed in the outcomes today but all we can do is move forward and keep looking and finding ways to improve our game. There's a lot of learning going on and I'm proud of the way we are handling the controllables we talk about. We will continue to work."
