ASHEVILLE, N.C. – St. Bonaventure split a Saturday doubleheader at UNC Asheville to complete a 2-2 weekend in North Carolina.
GAME 1 – St. Bonaventure 10, UNC Asheville 5
The Bonnies bats stayed hot after a Friday night win, carrying that momentum into Saturday's opener.
SBU took control by hanging a four spot in the third.
Joey Calabretti started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle followed by Antonio Cordeiro's triple to right which scored two more. Ashton Ross capped off the outburst with an RBI knock of his own for a 4-0 lead.
UNC-A (2-2) cut their deficit in half, sending the game to the seventh at 4-2 before the Bonnies found insurance.
Manuel Castro drilled his second home run in as many days, a two-run shot out to left for some breathing room in the seventh.
In the eighth, Brian Carrothers broke it open with a two-run double before a passed ball and a Corderio run-scoring infield hit got the Bonnies to double digits.
That offense was more than enough for starter Enger Paulino who made his Division I debut a winning one.
The junior college right-hander impressed by allowing just one run on two hits with four strikeouts in his five innings of work.
Owen Smith (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB) and James Capellupo (1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) followed on the hill before Ryan Kucy registered the final four outs, allowing only one baserunner in relief.
Castro went 4-for-5 at the plate while Cordeiro and Conner Vercollone both had two hits apiece as well.
GAME 2 – UNC Asheville 9, St. Bonaventure 1
The Bulldogs flipped the script in the nightcap, immediately jumping out to four runs on four hits in the opening frame to seize control.
Cordeiro gave the Bonnies another early lead with a first inning RBI single, but it proved to be short-lived.
A pair of run-scoring doubles put the hosts on the board and a steal of home completed the opening frame scoring.
The Bulldogs played add-on from that point, tacking on two runs in each the second and third as well as a run in the fourth and never looked back.
Calabretti got the start on the mound (1.2 IP, 4 ER) and Jack Kelly (2.1 IP, 3 ER, 2 K) made his collegiate debut. Alex Barger (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K) and Gilbert Saunders III (1.0 IP, 1 H) each had scoreless frames of relief.
