BINGHAMTON – St. Bonaventure built a four-goal advantage with under 30 seconds to play in the first half but went cold late in an icy rain as host Binghamton rallied back for a 9-7 decision Wednesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Early on, it was all Bonnies.
Senior Brooke Piper put on a show in the first two quarters, recording her second consecutive hat trick as she netted four goals under 26 minutes into the contest. Her fourth tally gave the Bonnies a 7-3 lead that would last until just 27 seconds were left on the first half clock.
St. Bonaventure (1-2) scored three player-up goals during a dominating first half as Kierstin Hillis, Sidney Van Tassel and Riley Milligan all found the back of the net as well.
But as well as things went for the Bonnies in the first half, the tables completely turned as the rain continued to fall.
Emily Blloshmi gave the Bearcats a bit of positive momentum heading into intermission as she scored 27 seconds before the half, however it seemed as though the Bonnies were still in control.
The Bearcats defense held the Bonnies off the scoreboard for the final 33:50 of game time as they chipped away at their deficit.
Blloshmi started the second half scoring as well and the Bearcats finally tied things with 54 seconds left in the third.
A 7-7 deadlock remained until the 8:44 mark of the fourth quarter when the Bearcats scored the game-winning goal.
St. Bonaventure dominated on the draw, winning 13 out of 18 draw controls, led by seven won by Megan Schillinger. Binghamton held a 25-22 edge in shots while the Bonnies turned the ball over 17 times to Binghamton's 13. The Bonnies were successful in all but one clear attempt on the afternoon.
Rylee Gonzalez recorded two assists for Bona.
Defensively, Brit Colangelo and Brooke Owens each tallied two caused turnovers. Reigning Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week Judy Mahoney made eight saves in net.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH LEIGHANN STAUFFER
"I'm not sure what team came out of the locker room in the second half, but it wasn't ours. The team that beat us today was our own. Hoping to learn from this humbling experience and turn things around going into the weekend."
