ANNAPOLIS, MD – A series rubber game pitchers' duel went the way of the host Navy Midshipmen as the St. Bonaventure baseball team fell in a 4-0 decision Sunday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium.
For the second consecutive day, the Bonnies received an outstanding start on the mound. On Saturday, lefty Nolan Feidt shut down the Midshipmen, and on Sunday fellow junior college transfer Enger Paulino impressed as well.
Paulino did not allow an earned run in his five innings of work, surrendering just a lone single while walking three and striking out a season-high seven.
Navy scratched across a run in the home fifth after a fielding error allowed the leadoff man to reach and he would eventually score on a sacrifice fly for the game's first run.
The first two batters reached in the Bona sixth and a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into second and third with one away. Navy starter Owen Phypers got out of the jam with a ground out and a strikeout, though, preserving a 1-0 lead for the hosts.
In the seventh, the Midshipmen added an insurance run on a steal of home.
Bona had another chance to break through in the eighth when a Manuel Castro single followed by a double off the bat of Chris Hoalcraft left the Bonnies with the tying run in scoring position with one away. A pop up and a flyout ended the chance, however.
Phypers moved to 3-0 on the season with seven innings of shutout pitching, scattering four hits with four strikeouts. Leadoff man Jake Hooten posted three hits to lead the offense for Navy (7-3).
Castro and Alex Hebenstreit each had two hits for the Bonnies (4-6).
WRAPPING UP THE SERIES WITH HEAD COACH JASON RATHBUN
"We played three competitive games. Unfortunately, in two games we didn't come up with the clutch hits at the right time. I have confidence our hitters will figure it out. I am extremely happy with the way our pitchers are performing. They are giving us a chance to win every game. These games have been a good learning experience as we get closer to conference play."Â
UP NEXT
The Bonnies will start a spring break trip with midweek action at perennial Mid-American Conference power Kent State on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday's game will lead into a weekend three-game series at Marshall Friday through Sunday.
