KENT, Ohio – Joey Calabretti clubbed two home runs, but Kent State took full advantage of Bona wildness on the mound to break the game open in the middle innings en route to a 14-9 victory in non-conference baseball action Wednesday.
St. Bonaventure grabbed a 4-2 lead after Calabretti homered in back-to-back at-bats, his first round-trippers in a Bonnies uniform. He first drilled a three-run blast to left in the second for a 3-1 advantage, then sent a solo shot out to left again in the fourth for a two-run edge.
Kent State (9-3) scored four times in the fourth and six more in the fifth, however, to rally and take complete control.
Free bases were the kryptonite for the Bonnies pitching staff as Bona pitchers combined to hand out 11 walks and hit three batters.
Calabretti, Anthony Fernandez, Manuel Castro, Alex Hebenstreit and Conner Vercollone all posted two hits apiece as the Bonnies matched Kent with 13 hits on the day.
Freshman Christian LaMothe also hammered his first collegiate home run in the eighth for the Bonnies (4-7).
SBU heads to Marshall this weekend for a three-game series beginning Friday night at 6 p.m.
