FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason pulled away Saturday to score a 15-11 win over the St. Bonaventure baseball team on a day for offense and sloppy defense.
The Bonnies grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third on a run-scoring double off the bat of Chris Hoalcraft to start the offense before Christian LaMothe singled home the second tally of the inning. Joey Bruno worked a bases loaded walk to complete the uprising.
Unfortunately for the Bonnies, that lead was short-lived as the Patriots immediately answered with a nine spot in the home half of the third.
Three Bona errors opened the flood gates in the inning as all of the runs were unearned with 14 men coming to the plate. The Bona defense was plagued by four errors on the afternoon.
Bona's big inning came in the fifth as Bruno was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home a run before Anthony Fernandez singled to right for another tally.
Later in the inning, Conner Vercollone brought in another with a sacrifice fly followed by back-to-back doubles by Hoalcraft and Manuel Castro to knot things at 9-9.
Once again, though, the Bonnies could not maintain momentum as George Mason moved ahead on a wild pitch with a runner at third and later scored another run on a popup for an 11-9 tally.
The Bonnies got back within a single score again on a squeeze play executed for a run, but Mason got that run right back in the home half and never relinquished control from there.
Hoalcraft went 4-for-5 with three RBIs at the plate with both Fernandez and LaMothe finishing with three hits apiece. Bruno also registered a season-best three RBIs.
Owen Clyne drove in four runs for the Patriots (8-8, 2-0 A-10).
The series finale is set for Sunday at noon.
