RICHMOND, Va. – St. Bonaventure baseball found themselves fighting from behind early and could not rally as VCU took a 4-2 victory in an Atlantic 10 series opener Friday at The Diamond in Richmond.
VCU jumped on the board with a run in the first and the lone tally stood until the fifth when Nick Kirkpatrick drilled a two-run homer to left for a three-run cushion.
St. Bonaventure got back within a run in the sixth on infield singles by Ashton Ross and Chris Hoalcraft, but another Rams homer – this time from Jacob Lee – in the seventh gave the hosts breathing room.
Christian LaMothe was the lone hitter in the Bona lineup to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
David James (4 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) and Derek Duval (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) combined on the hill for the Bonnies.
Teige Lethert posted three hits for VCU.
The two teams are slated to renew acquaintances Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
