RICHMOND, Va. – St. Bonaventure was forced to battle from behind early and could not find a way out of a first inning hole as the Bonnies dropped the Atlantic 10 baseball series finale at VCU Sunday, 6-5.
Manuel Castro led the Bonnies with a 3-for-5 day at the plate to up his season average to .330.
VCU pulled ahead immediately with a three-run first inning, leaving the Bonnies to claw from behind from that point.
Bona's got a run back from Alex Hebenstreit's RBI single up the middle in the fourth, but VCU gained two runs with a response in the home half of the frame.
Both teams picked up a run in the fifth before the Bonnies scored three times in the sixth to get back within a tally. The biggest blow in the frame came on a line drive double off the bat of Castro to score two for a 6-5 score.
From there, though, the Bonnies did not threaten again vs. the Rams bullpen.
Conner Vercollone also had a double for the Bonnies.
James Capellupo threw 2.2 innings of hitless relief, striking out two with just a walk against him. Joey Calabretti tossed a scoreless eighth out of the bullpen.
