BUFFALO, N.Y. – Brendan Sheehan scored his third goal in two games, helping the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win on the road at Canisius Tuesday evening.
Bona's win marks the first Little Three sweep since 2023 and the first time the Bonnies have shut out both Niagara and Canisius since 1995.
Winston Jory was tested early in the 11th minute and made the save on Noah Baumslaug's shot.
The Bonnies (2-2-2) first chance of the night came off the foot of Callum Shillington in the 20th minute, but he was turned away by Canisius goalkeeper Preston Harold.
Josh Seyer had a look on net in the 34th minute off a corner, while Ethan Lustig added a chance in the 44th minute. Both shots were saved by Harold as the teams headed into halftime scoreless.
Neshawn Sutherland forced Harold to make a save in the 53rd minute before Manex Landa's shot in the 55th minute rolled just wide of the net.
The Bonnies finally broke through in the 60th minute when Sutherland burst down the sideline past the defense and played a cutback pass to Brendan Sheehan, who tapped in the goal to give the Brown and White a 1-0 advantage.
Sheehan recorded his third goal in the last two games, while Sutherland registered his first assist of the season.
The Golden Griffins (1-5-0) had their best chance of the second half in the 78th minute when a corner was sent into the box. The ball bounced around before Romero Nicolazzo struck a shot through traffic, with Jory and the defense sending it out of harm's way.
Landa paced the Bonnies with three shots, while Sutherland, Jack Steel and Alistair McFall each registered a pair of chances.
Jory finished the game with four saves while securing his third shutout of the season.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MICK GIORDANO
"We had to make a little bit of our own luck happen and that's something that we haven't had happened in the last few weeks. The boys really worked really hard and pressed well. Canisius is a wonderful soccer team and are a lot better than the record says. Making sure that we respected them, but also that we played our game. We sat on the front foot and then made the most of a wonderful chance. It was great. An unselfish play from Neshawn to slip Brendan in and then be able to hold onto the lead on the road is even sweeter so very fortunate for that."
