Rams edge Bonnies, 2-1

Oct. 18, 2002

KINGSTON, R.I. - The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team fell to Rhode Island 2-1 at the URI Soccer Complex on Friday.

The Bonnies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first half when junior forward Geron DuPorte (Scarborough, Ontario/R.H. King Academy) found senior midfielder Kareem Reynolds (Scarborough, Ontario/Mother Therese), who beat Rhode Island goalie Michael Charles in the 29th minute. Reynolds was playing in his first game since last year.

Rhode Island responded with a goal of its own late in the first half at the 41 minute mark. Senior Peter Benevides tallied his eighth goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1.

Sasha Gotsmanov of Rhode Island scored the game-winner in the 60th minute off of a penalty kick.

The Rams outshot the Bonnies 21-9.

"We missed some excellent chances to score," said head coach Bill Brady. "We battled for 90 minutes, and if we continue to play hard, I don't see why we can't win the rest of our games."

Junior goalie Tim Landry (Rochester, N.Y./Northstar Academy) received his second start of the season. Landry recorded six saves in the loss.

St. Bonaventure drops to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the Atlantic 10 conference. Rhode Island improves to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play.

The Bonnies will travel to Massachusetts Sunday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is scheduled at 1 p.m.
