Nov. 9, 2002

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - - The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team finished its season with a loss to Duquesne, Saturday, 3-2, at Arthur J. Rooney Field.

The Bonnies took an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when junior forward Geron DuPorte (Scarborough, Ontario/R.H. King Academy) scored on a breakaway. Senior midfielder Bob Hammer (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) assisted on the score.

Duquesne netted the score in the 34th minute when James Tarone scored his sixth goal of the season.

Junior defender Nick Blair (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) put the Bonnies back in the lead, 2-1 when he picked up a loose ball and booted it past Duquesne goalie Terry McNelis in the 61st minute. Sophomore forward Misael Pedraza (Tomball, Texas/Tomball) and freshman midfielder Scott Marshall (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville East) picked up assists on the score.

Ten minutes later, the Dukes tied up the game again when Damien Pottinger scored his 16th goal of the season.

Nathan Salsi of Duquesne scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 81st minute.

Junior goalie Tim Landry (Rochester, N.Y./Northstar Academy) recorded 10 saves in the loss.

"It was a great game," said St. Bonaventure head coach Bill Brady. "Duquesne's a good team and I think they were pretty fortunate to get out with a win. We played very well."

Senior midfielder John Phoumanny (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) finished the year with a team-high 24 points, nine goals, and six assists.

St. Bonaventure finished 8-10 overall and 3-8 in the Atlantic 10 conference.

"We've shown good form the last couple of weekends. Our freshman class was exceptional. With a few more key recruits we should be in the thick of things next year."
