ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team shutout Rhode Island, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field, ending a seven-game losing streak and earning its first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season.
The Bonnies' offense got off to a quick start, netting their first goal just seven minutes into the first half. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Mahoney scored off a deflected pass from senior forward Jahmal Cameron in the left corner of the box in the 6th minute.
In the 66th minute, freshman midfielder Kevin Omokhua sprinted on a breakaway from midfield, but Rhode Island's Anthony Ward-Smith cut him down just shy of the goal. Officials issued Ward-Smith with a yellow card, and senior midfielder Geron DuPorte blasted the ball into the net on a penalty kick for his first goal on the season.
Rhode Island outshot the Bonnies 9-5 overall, but the Bonnies relied on tight defense to come away with the victory.
St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Sean Eyde (Tuscon, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) earned two saves, bringing his record to 2-8 in 10 starts.
The win improves the Bonnies to 2-12-1 and 1-6 in A-10 play.
The Bonnies will return to action on Sunday against Massachusetts at McGraw-Jennings field. Game time has been rescheduled for a noon start.
