Explorers defeat SBU in conference opener

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - La Salle shut out the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team, 2-0, in the Bonnies' conference opener.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first half, before La Salle exploded for two goals within 10 minutes from senior midfielder Tom Kenney to secure the Explorers' victory.

Kenney scored on a penalty kick past St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Sean Eyde in the 58th minute. Kenney then rebounded a shot in the box and put the ball between the posts for his second goal in the 68th minute. Freshman midfielder John Biello and junior midfielder Bill Cosentino both tallied assists on the play.

In a tight offensive contest, La Salle outshot the Bonnies 12-11 overall. Sophomore defender Konrad Paszkowski led the Bonnies with three shots on goal, while sophomore defender Steve Roach added two shots. The Bonnies had scoring opportunities, as six other Bonnies recorded shots.

Eyde started the game in goal and finished with three saves, while La Salle's Stash Graham totaled six.

The Bonnies stand 0-1 in the Atlantic 10 and 1-7-1 overall.

St. Bonaventure will take the Colonials of George Washington in Philadelpia Sunday, October 5 at 3:00 p.m.
