BUFFALO, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team tallied its first win of the 2003 season, shutting out Canisius 1-0.
In the 34th minute, senior defender Nick Blair flipped a throw-in to sophomore defender Konrad Paszkowski, who put the ball past Canisius goalkeeper Dan Panaro into the right side of the net.
The Bonnies (1-5-1) continued to control the offense in the first half, outshooting Canisius 8-3. St. Bonaventure outshot the Golden Griffins 12-7 overall, including three shots on goal from senior forwards Jahmal Cameron and Ryan Hallenbeck, and sophomore forward Dan Bowen.
The Bonnies had several scoring opportunities early in the first frame. In the seventh minute, on a breakaway, freshman midfielder Kevin Omokhua's shot flew over the crossbar. Seven minutes later, the Bonnies found themselves with a two-on-one advantage, but junior forward Brian Donovan's shot went wide.
In the second half, Canisius put Adam Sleyzak in the net, who recorded three saves to keep the Bonnies from adding to their lead.
Junior Sean Eyde earned the win in the net, also recording three saves.
Cameron led St. Bonaventure with three shots, followed by Omokhua with two. St. Bonaventure enjoyed a balanced offensive effort, as six other Bonnies recorded shots.
The Bonnies will travel to Dartmouth on Sunday, September 28 at 4 p.m. for their final non-conference game of the season.
