Binghamton downs Bonnies in home opener

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Despite a ninth-inning surge, St. Bonaventure fell to Binghamton, 13-10, on Thursday in the Bonnies' home opener at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The Bonnies fell behind 3-1 in the opening inning, which was highlighted by a two-run home run from Binghamton's Jay Balback.

The Bearcats added home runs from Brendon Hitchcock in the second and Joe Costello in the third to help them open a 6-2 lead after three innings. Binghamton would also add four runs in the fifth inning to go ahead 10-3.

Down 13-5 heading into the ninth, the Bonnies rallied to score five runs on six hits. Senior outfielder Matt Landahl and freshman first baseman Kiernan Malone each doubled. Freshman third baseman Matt Marduesz smacked a three-run home run, his second of the year, over the left field fence to pull the Bonnies within 13-10, but Binghamton's Chris Darling got a fly ball and a strikeout to end the game.

Starter Chris Shores earned the win on the mound for Binghamton, improving to 2-1 on the season. Bona sophomore Sean Bruet took the loss, evening his record at 1-1.

The teams combined for 35 hits - 18 for St. Bonaventure and 17 by Binghamton.

St. Bonaventure fell to 9-11, while Binghamton improved to 12-9.

The Bonnies travel to Atlantic 10 rival Fordham for a three-game series beginning Saturday, April 17. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
