ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
St. Bonaventure and the University at Buffalo split a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at wind-blown McGraw-Jennings Field. The Bonnies won the opener 8-0 and the Bulls took the nightcap 4-3.
The Bonnies dominated Game 1 behind the complete game performance of freshman pitcher Mike Proctor, who allowed just six hits and struck out four. He did not surrender a walk.
The Bonnies scored once in each of the first three innings, then blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Senior shortstop Eric Wilson and senior outfielder Matt Landahl both had RBI doubles while freshman first baseman Kieran Malone and junior second baseman Craig King recorded RBI singles in that frame.
Wilson went 2-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases in the opener. King and Malone each recorded a pair of hits in that game as well.
Buffalo jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of Game Two, scoring a pair of runs in both the first and third innings against Bonnies' sophomore starter John Zinnicker. Sophomore Sean Bruet came on to hold Buffalo without a hit or a run over the final 4-1/3 innings.
The Bonnies scored their first run on a double steal in the fourth, when Wilson singled and later scored on a double steal. In the seventh, the Bonnies came up with back-to-back singles, then used three straights walks to pull within 4-3. But UB freshman Eric Kelly struck out freshman Matt Marduesz and Wilson to end the game.
St. Bonaventure had just seven hits in the nightcap and UB six.
The Bonnies are now 13-13, while Buffalo is 8-23 on the season.
St. Bonaventure will host Canisius in a doubleheader Thursday beginning at 2 p.m.
