Rhode Island takes two from Bonnies

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure dropped both games of a doubleheader to Rhode Island Saturday afternoon in a battle between the first and second place teams in the Atlantic 10 East division. The Bonnies lost the opener 8-4 and fell in the nightcap 6-2.

In Game 1, Rhode Island jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a three-run home run from Daryl Holcomb. The Bonnies responded in the bottom of the inning, as senior center fielder Matt Landahl knocked out a three-run home run of his own. Rhode Island pitcher Dan Frederick hit freshman third baseman Matt Marduesz and senior shortstop Eric Wilson to set up Landahl's home run.

While Rhode Island held St. Bonaventure scoreless for the remainder of the game, the Rams added four runs on five hits in the sixth to seal the victory.

Bona senior Soren Johnson took the loss on the mound, falling to 0-2 on the season. Frederick earned the complete game win and improved to 4-2.

Overall, the Bonnies recorded eight hits, while the Rams had ten.

In the nightcap, both teams remained scoreless through the first three innings, but Rhode Island had a five-run fourth inning to put the game away. The Bonnies chipped away, scoring one run in both the fourth and sixth innings. Designated hitter Matt Agostonelli recorded sacrifice hits and scored Wilson in both innings

Rhode Island pitcher Stephen Holmes struck out two in the bottom of the seventh, holding the Bonnies in their last attempt at a comeback. Holmes earned the win for the Rams and remained undefeated at 4-0. St. Bonaventure pitcher Mike McCormack took the loss on the mound, evening his record at 3-3.

With the pair of losses, the Bonnies dropped to 15-15 overall and 6-5 in A-10 action. The Rams improved to 21-15-1 on the year and 12-2 in conference play.

The teams complete the three-game series Sunday, April 24 at McGraw-Jennings field. Game time has been changed to 8:30 a.m.
