St. Bonaventure swept Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 Conference action Saturday at Elmwood Park. The Bonnies took Game 1, 8-2, and won the nightcap, 5-3.
Senior shortstop Eric Wilson broke St. Bonaventure's all-time record for hits with his first of the day. He topped 1995 graduate Tom Tegeler's mark of 197.
The Bonnies put one run on the board to open Game 1, as sophomore left fielder Dan Bratys scored on a wild pitch. The Bonnies plated two runs in each of the next two innings, highlighted by a leadoff home run from freshman third baseman Matt Marduesz over the left field fence. Junior second baseman Craig King later double down the left field line, and scored on a single from freshman first baseman Kieran Malone.
In the third inning, while the Hawks threw freshman right fielder Brian Pellegrini out at second, senior shortstop Eric Wilson stole home. Senior center fielder Matt Landahl singled to right field, driving in Marduesz, who reached earlier on a fielder's choice.
Saint Joseph's plated one run in the third, but the Bonnies scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth, on a two-run home run to left field off the bat of Wilson, to pull away with the win.
Pitching a complete game, senior Soren Johnson earned the win for the Bonnies, allowing nine hits and two runs, while striking out seven. Johnson evened his season record at 2-2. Saint Joseph's Ryan Hoagey took the loss and fell to 2-7.
Wilson went 3-for-4 in the game, driving in two and scoring two. Pellegrini also went 3-for-4 with one run scored., while Matt Landahl went 3-for-3. Marduesz went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
In Game 2, both teams put runs on the board in the second. After tripling to right field, Marduesz scored on a sacrifice fly from junior catcher Damian Blakeley. The Bonnies scored one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead into the seventh. Bona plated two insurance runs in the seventh, as Wilson reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a Marduesz ground out. Freshman designated hitter Joe Rizzo singled to left field, driving in Pellegrini, who was walked earlier in the inning.
The Hawks plated two runs in the bottom of the inning, but with a runner on first, freshman pitcher Michael Proctor struck out the tying run to end the rally.
Proctor earned the win on the mound, improving to 2-2 on the season. He allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out four in seven innings of work. The Hawks' Adriano Petrutz took the loss, dropping to 2-5.
Rizzo went 2-for-3 in Game 2, while Pellegrini led the Bonnies' offense, going 5-for-7 on the day with three runs and one RBI.
With the sweep, the Bonnies improved to 21-17 overall and 11-6 in A-10 play. Saint Joseph's fell to 10-39 overall and 4-16 in conference action.
The teams return to action in the series finale Sunday, May 9 beginning at noon.
