ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - In a game twice delayed by thunderstorms and blustery winds. Massachusetts ended St. Bonaventure's postseason hopes with a 1-0 victory on Sunday at McGraw-Jennings Field.
UMass' lone goal came on an early St. Bonaventure miscue. In the 12th minute, a Bonnies player put the ball off the post and into his own goal in an attempt to clear a crossing pass.
The Bonnies had a chance to tie the score with just less than two minutes to play in the second half. Sophomore Jon Lopez's shot was deflected high into the air and hit the crossbar before bouncing back in front of the goal. After a scramble for possession, Minutemen keeper Zack Simmons managed to cover the ball.
Both Simmons and St. Bonaventure keeper Jonathan Blanchard made five saves.
Lopez led the Bonnies with four shots in the game, while junior Kevin Omokhua tallied three. St. Bonaventure out-shot Massachusetts 14-12.
The Bonnies needed to win its final regular season game to keep any hopes alive for a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
St. Bonaventure ended the year 4-11-3 overall and with an Atlantic 10 record of 3-5-1. The Minutemen are 8-9-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the conference.
The game marked the final contest for seniors Andy Garcia, Konrad Paszkowski, Frederick Taylor, Ricky Phillips, Steve Roach and John Royer in a Bona uniform. The six seniors were honored in a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
