Men's soccer falls to A-10 foe Charlotte, 3-1

Oct. 22, 2006

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team could not find the answer to a swarming Charlotte attack as the Bonnies fell to the 49ers, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field.

Charlotte dominated the offensive tempo of the game, tallying 19 shots to St. Bonaventure's seven. Bona goalkeeper Ken Lish turned away nine shots, while 49ers keeper David Martin made five saves.

The 49ers got on the board first when Pete Palomino's shot glanced off a diving Lish and found the back of the net just 2:57 into the opening half. Palomino would score again in the 19th minute to give Charlotte an early 2-0 advantage.

The Bonnies closed the gap in the 41st minute when junior midfielder Phil Amahazion took a pass from Nick Lopez and fired it past Martin to pull St. Bonaventure to 2-1, but the Bonnies could not get any closer as 49ers forward Tom Woollard closed the door on St. Bonaventure's comeback attempt with a goal in the 69th minute to increase the Charlotte lead 3-1.

The Bonnies fell to 1-12-2 and 1-4-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference with two games remaining, while Charlotte improved to 9-4-3 and 5-1-1 in conference play.

St. Bonaventure returns to action on Friday when they host St. Joseph's at 3 p.m.
