ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
Taking on one of the hottest teams in the nation, the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team was simply overmatched as it fell to nationally ranked Bowling Green, 71-46, on Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center.
The Falcons came into the contest ranked No. 22 in this week's USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll. The win improves BGSU's record to 7-1 on the season and extends its winning streak to six games. The loss drops the Bonnies to 4-5.
Stout defense helped Bowling Green take a commanding 36-18 lead at the half. The Brown and White shot just 29 percent (7-24) from the floor over the first 20 minutes, while committing a season-high 12 first half turnovers. Senior forward Audrey Latendresse was held scoreless in a half for the first time this season.
Bowling Green opened the game on an 8-0 that last nearly four minutes until sophomore Katelyn Murray drained a three-pointer at the 16:15 mark to get St. Bonaventure on the board.
The Bonnies closed the gap to seven, 20-13, with 6:50 remaining until Bowling Green responded by outscoring the Bonnies 16-5 to close the half to balloon the lead to 17.
The senior tandem of Ali Mann and Carin Horne combined for 38 points, 18 apiece, to lead a Bowling Green team that finished 30-of-62 (48 percent) from the field.
The Brown and White shot just 34 percent (16-47) for the game, including 25 percent (5-20) from long range. For the seventh time this season, the battle of the boards went to the Bonnie, 40-31, but a season-high 27 turnover nullified that advantage.
Freshman forward Dana Mitchell was the only player to reach double-figures for St. Bonaventure with 11 points and six rebounds. All nine of Murray's points came on 3-of-8 shooting from long range, while junior Priscilla Edwards finished with four points, a game-high seven rebounds and three assists.
St. Bonaventure will have a week off from game action until it plays its first of seven-straight road games on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Canisius. Tip-off is schedule for 1 p.m.
