CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
Superior size and depth was the difference in St. Bonaventure's 73-39 loss to Charlotte Friday night at Halton Arena.
The 49ers scored 44 of their 73 points in the paint and held a 48-25 advantage on the boards. All but one player registered a field goal for Charlotte on the night as it maintains first place in the Atlantic 10, improving to 10-1 in the conference.
Senior Stefanie Collins knocked down a pair of three-pointers to give the Bonnies an early three-point edge, 8-5, 4:09 into the game. The 49ers then responded with a 10-0 run that vaulted them into the lead, 15-8, with 12:03 remaining.
The brown and white continued to fight as they climbed within two after a 9-4 run that was highlighted by five points from junior Audrey Latendresse. With the score 19-17, Charlotte quickly pushed the lead to 10, 27-17, with eight straight points in just over a minute.
Freshman Katelyn Murray buried a jumper from the right wing and then followed it up with a trifecta to pull the Bonnies to within five, 27-22. Sakellie Daniels' lay-up as time expired gave the 49ers a 33-22 lead heading into the break.
The difference in the first half was each team's shooting percentage, as St. Bonaventure hit just 8-of-26 (31 percent) from the field, while Charlotte connected on 14-27 (52 percent) from the floor.
After closing the first half with a 6-0 run, the 49ers opened the game up with an 8-0 spurt to begin the second stanza to push the lead to 19, at 41-22.
Two straight buckets from freshman Ashley Edwards and sophomore Maripier Malo made the score 41-26 three minutes into the half. That would be as close as the Bonnies would come as they only managed 13 points on six field goals the rest of the way.
St. Bonaventure finished 16-54 (30 percent) from the field, while Charlotte was 31-of-58 (53 percent) from the field.
Collins, Murray and Latendresse each scored eight apiece to lead the Bonnies. Latendresse also gathered a team-high seven rebounds.
