A dominating pitching performance by John Zinnicker led St. Bonaventure's baseball team to a 6-1 decision over Monmouth on Friday afternoon at Florida Atlantic University. It was the Bonnies' second win over the Hawks in as many days.
Zinnicker allowed Monmouth a run in the first inning and then shut out the Hawks the next 6-1/3 innings. The senior lefthander allowed only six hits and struck out six over his 7-1/3 innings of work to earn his first win of the season.
Junior Ryan Kerr pitched the final 1-2/3 innings and allowed only one hit.
St. Bonaventure improved to 2-3 while Monmouth fell to 2-8.
St. Bonaventure's bats, which had been fairly quiet over the season's first four games, came alive with 15 hits on Friday. The Bonnies tied the game at 1-1 in the third, then went ahead with single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. St. Bonaventure sealed the win with three runs in the seventh to make it 6-1. Junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini's RBI double highlighted the Bonnies' seventh.
Sophomore centerfielder Randy Moley continued his strong start to the year by going 3-4 with two stolen bases and a run. Junior shortstop Josh Perkins also had three hits, finishing 3-5 with two RBI. Freshman second baseman Kevin Suminski, who came on when junior Kieran Malone sustained a facial injury in the second inning, went 2-4 as did freshman catcher B.J. Salerno. Malone's inkur, which occured when he was hit while trying to field a bouncing throw from the outfield, is not believed to be serious.
The Bonnies will play a pair of games on Saturday. They will complete their three-game series with Monmouth at 11 a.m., then face Iona at 7 p.m.
