CORNING, N.Y. -
Led by freshman Katelyn Faas' three goals and 15 saves from sophomore Eboni Preston, the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team defeated Albany 9-7 on Friday afternoon at Corning Memorial Stadium.
Trailing 1-0, the Bona offense responded with four goals over a 5:10 span to take the lead. Junior Robin Mason tallied the first Bonaventure goal at the 24:00 mark and senior Nicole Motondo quickly followed 51 seconds later to make it 2-1. Faas ended the run with back-to-back goals within in a one-minute span, making it 4-1.
The two teams traded goals the rest of the half with Albany getting the last score to cut the Bona lead to 6-4 heading into the break.
Albany opened the scoring 4:24 into the second half to pull within one. The one-two punch of sophomore Brenna Houghton and Faas combined for the next two goals to make it 8-5 in favor of the Bonnies. Houghton tallied the first goal off a pass from Faas and Houghton returned the favor to Faas minutes later at 21:11.
Both teams were held scoreless for the next 14 minutes until Albany broke through with 7:28 remaining to make it 8-6. Another Motondo pushed the lead back to three and sealed the victory.
Goalie play was the difference as Albany dominated the action at the offensive end. The Great Danes held a 34-20 advantage in shots, including a 16-8 margin in the second half. Preston's 15 saves were a career-high as she picked up the win in net.
Faas finished with five points on three goals and two assists. Motondo's two scores brought her career total to 97, leaving her just three goals shy of becoming the fourth player in school history to reach the 100-goal plateau. Senior Sarah Dressler, Mason, and sophomores Meghan DePaul and Houghton all scored once.
The win improves the Bonnies' record to 2-0 and 5-1 all-time against Albany. The Great Danes slip to 3-2 with the loss.
St. Bonaventure will return to the turf of Corning Memorial Stadium on Sunday as it takes on Central Connecticut St. Game time is scheduled for noon.
