St. Bonaventure committed five errors and allowed eight unearned runs as it fell to West Virginia, 18-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Hawley Field.
With the Bonnies trailing 2-1 in the third inning, West Virginia took advantage of three St. Bonaventure errors and three wild pitches from redshirt freshman pitcher Jim Britton. The Mountaineers tallied six runs - all unearned - on only four hits in the inning.
West Virginia led 10-1 after five innings of play before exploding for another six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Bonnies got on the board first with two outs in the top of the first inning on junior Brian Pellegrini's solo home run to center field. Pellegrini added a three-run shot in the eighth, scoring sophomore Tristan Mulcahy and junior Josh Perkins, who both drew walks.
Pellegrini went 2-3 with two runs and four RBIs, while Mulcahy, Perkins and sophomore T.J. Pennino recorded the only other hits for the Bonnies, who finished with five hits on the day compared to 20 by West Virginia.
Sophomore pitcher Eddie Williams picked up the loss for the Bonnies, but gave up only two hits and two runs through two complete innings of work before handing the ball over to Britton in the third. Williams fell to 1-2 on the year, while Mountaineer pitcher Brendan Bergerson (5.2 IP, 3 H, 1R, 5 K) earned the win to improve to 1-0.
The Bonnies dropped to 4-5 and the Mountaineers improved to 16-3.
St. Bonaventure travels to Pittsburgh on Friday to begin a three game series against Duquesne. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
