PITTSBURGH -
Junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini and junior left fielder Joe Rizzo combined for three home runs and eight RBIs to lead St. Bonaventure past Duquesne, 15-4, on Sunday at Duquesne Field.
Pellegrini hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, and Rizzo - the next batter - connected for a solo shot to give the Bonnies an 11-1 lead. Pellegrini was 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs, while Rizzo - who added a three-run home run in the eighth - finished 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs.
Sophomore pitcher Eddie Williams gave the Bonnies a strong performance on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits while tallying four strikeouts in six innings of work. Freshman Brian Hardner and senior Matt Agostinelli pitched the final two innings for St. Bonaventure.
Williams improved to 2-2 on the year, while Dukes starting pitcher Alex Sharick fell to 0-1.
In the first inning the Bonnies scored two runs off Duquesne errors, and sophomore designated hitter Tristan Mulcahy drove in two more with an RBI single to give St. Bonaventure an early 4-0 lead. Mulcahy went 2-for-5, as the Bonnies out-hit the Dukes 16-6.
Duquesne scored a run in the second, but would not get any closer as the Bonnies added two more runs in the fourth before Pellegrini and Rizzo homered in the sixth.
The Bonnies won the series with Duquesne with the victory. The game was stopped after eight innings due to a new Atlantic 10 Conference 10-run mercy rule.
St. Bonaventure improved to 6-6 on the season and 2-1 in the conference, while Duquesne fell to 4-14 and 1-2 in the A-10.
The Bonnies travel to Ohio to begin a three game series with A-10 rival Dayton on Friday. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
