DAYTON, Ohio -
St. Bonaventure cracked Dayton preseason All-America pitcher Luke Trubee early and John Zinnicker took care of the rest as the Bonnies topped the Flyers 7-2 on Friday afternoon in the first of a three-game Atlantic 10 series at Time Warner Cable Stadium.
Zinnicker allowed just one run on five hits over seven innings of work en route to his second win of the season. The Bonnies' senior southpaw is now 2-2.
St. Bonaventure (7-6/3-1 Atlantic 10) struck for five runs against Trubee in the third inning. Junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini made it 2-0 with a two-run double, and junior left fielder Joe Rizzo followed with an RBI single. Later in the frame, junior third baseman Matt Mardeusz and junior second baseman Kieran Malone both scored runs with doubles of their own.
Rizzo made it 7-0 in the fourth inning with his fourth home run of the year, a two-run blast to center field.
Zinnicker and reliever Matt Agostinelli made that lead stand. Zinnicker allowed a single run in the fifth and Agostinelli gave up one in the eighth. The Bonnies' hurlers held Dayton to seven hits.
St. Bonaventure's offense continued to click. The Bonnies recorded 11 of their 13 hits against Trubee (2-4). Mardeusz and Malone each had three hits while Pellegrini, Rizzo and junior shortstop Josh Perkins finished with two apiece.
The Bonnies and Flyers will continue their three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
