Baseball loses to Maine, 7-1

PALM BEACH, Fla. - The University of Maine scored four times in the fourth inning and went on to a 7-1 win over St. Bonaventure on Monday in Palm Beach, Fla.

St. Bonaventure jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sophomore outfielder T.J. Pennino singled and advanced to second when junior second baseman Kieran Malone was hit by a pitch. Sophomore designated hitter Tristan Mulcahy then singled to right center field, scoring Pennino.

Maine answered with four runs in the fourth inning against Bonnies starter Eddie Williams. Curt Smith tripled down the right field line to score a pair of runs, and Frank Pesanello followed with a home run to right to give the Black Bears a 4-1 lead.

Joel Barrett made it 6-1 with a two-run single in the seventh.

The Bonnies finished with six hits on the afternoon, all singles and all against Maine starter Nolan Boike. Mulcahy and center fielder Randy Moley each had two hits.

Boike was the winning pitcher while Williams took the loss. Williams struck out seven and allowed four runs on only four hits over five innings of work.

The Bonnies fell to 0-2 while Maine is now 1-4.

The Bonnies and Black Bears will play again on Tuesday. The first pitch will be at noon.
