Junior slugger Brian Pellegrini hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to power the St. Bonaventure baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of George Washington on Saturday at McGraw-Jennings Field. The Bonnies took the first game 5-4 and prevailed in game two, 5-3.
Senior pitcher Matt Agostinelli picked up a save and a win in the doubleheader as the Bonnies improved to 12-11 overall and 7-5 in Atlantic 10 play. The sweep gave St. Bonaventure a two games to one series victory over the Colonials.
In game one, the Bonnies jumped out to a 2-0 in the second inning following a pair of RBI singles from freshman B.J. Salerno and junior Josh Perkins off of GW starter Josh Wilkie. After the Colonials answered with a run in the top of the fourth to make it 2-1, sophomore Randy Moley singled in junior Kieran Malone to give Bona a 3-1 lead. Pellegrini then ripped a two-run homer to left centerfield that extended the Bonnies lead to 5-1.
George Washington (12-23, 5-7 A-10) would cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the seventh, but Bonnies sophomore starting pitcher Cody Vincent made the lead stand up. Vincent (2-2) went seven and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and striking out seven. Agostinelli recorded the final four outs for the Bonnies to earn his first save of the season.
Pellegrini provided the offense for the Bonnies in game two, belting a grand slam in the bottom of the third to give St. Bonaventure a 4-1 lead. The Colonials closed the gap with two runs in the fourth inning to make it 4-3. The Bonnies tacked on another run when Agostinelli drove in junior third baseman Matt Marduesz on a sacrifice fly, making it 5-3.
Agostinelli picked up the victory on the mound with a strong outing in relief of Bonnies starter John Zinnicker. Agostinelli did not give up a hit in three and one-third innings in game two to pick up his first win of the season.
For the day, Pellegrini went 3-for-7 with two home runs and six RBI. The Willoughby, Ohio native now has a team-high seven homers this season. Marduesz and Malone also recorded three hits apiece for the doubleheader.
The Bonnies return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Niagara University for a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
