Buffalo sweeps doubleheader from Bonnies

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Buffalo swept a doubleheader from St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field by scores of 8-4 and 8-5.

Buffalo recorded 23 hits over the two games including three home runs.

The Bulls took the opener by scoring four runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth. The Bonnies led 3-2 going into the fifth, but David Amaro's three-run home run keyed the Bulls' surge in that frame that made it 6-3.

James Kingsley went 4-4 with three RBI as UB recorded 12 hits in the opener. UB starter Steve Geltz allowed three runs on five hits over four innings and earned the win.

Junior third baseman Matt Mardeusz recorded two of the Bonnies' seven hits. Junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini went 1-3 with a two-run home run, his team-leading eighth of the year. Pellegrini now has 26 career home runs, good for second place in school history. Junior left fielder Joe Rizzo hit his seventh home run of the year, a solo shot in the fifth.

Bonnies sophomore starter John Nolan took the loss. He allowed all eight Buffalo runs on 10 hits and suffered his first loss of the year (2-1).

In the nightcap, UB overcame a 5-3 deficit in the sixth inning, scoring three times to take a 6-5 lead. Mike Folli had a two-run single and Brad Agustin plated the other run with a single. The Bulls gained some insurance runs on Dan Quinn's two-run homer in the seventh.

St. Bonaventure had trailed 3-2 in the fourth inning before battling back with three runs in the bottom of that frame. Center fielder Randy Moley led off the inning with a home run, the first of his career, and Mardeusz plated two more runs with a single.

Bonnies reliever Sean Bruet took the loss, dropping his record to 1-2. Bruet allowed five runs over three innings.

St. Bonaventure had 10 hits in the second game as Pellegrini went 3-4, Moley went 2-4 with two runs scored, Marduesz was 2-3 and junior shortstop Josh Perkins also was 2-3.

St. Bonaventure fell to 13-14 on the season while Buffalo improved to 9-24.

This weekend, the Bonnies will travel to Rhode Island for a three game set with the Rams beginning on Friday.
