ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
A grand slam home run by junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini powered St. Bonaventure to a 14-4 victory over Xavier on Sunday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
With the win, the Bonnies completed their three-game series sweep against the Musketeers and increased their Atlantic 10 Conference win streak to seven games. St. Bonaventure improved to 18-15 overall and 12-5 in the conference, while Xavier fell to 13-34 with a 3-15 A-10 mark.
St. Bonaventure trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore center fielder Randy Moley put the Bonnies on the board with an RBI single. With two outs and the bases loaded, Pellegrini hit his second grand slam in as many days to give St. Bonaventure a 5-3 lead. It was his 11th home run of the season.
The Bonnies did not look back as they scored nine more runs on six hits in the final two innings. Due to a new conference "ten run rule," the game was called in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Pellegrini went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored, while Moley finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the leadoff spot. Junior shortstop Josh Perkins enjoyed another strong offensive performance as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Perkins was 8-for-13 with four RBIs and four runs scored in the Xavier series.
Red-shirt freshman Jim Britton struck out three batters and allowed only one run on two hits in three innings of work to pick up the win for the Bonnies. He improved to 2-3 on the year.
Sophomore Eddie Williams got the start for St. Bonaventure, but gave way to Britton after surrendering three runs on eight hits through the first five innings.
The Bonnies return to action on Tuesday when they host Big 4 rival Niagara. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
