St. Bonaventure tied a school record with its 16th Atlantic 10 Conference win of the year, a 6-5 decision over Temple on Sunday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex.
The Bonnies (24-18/16-7 Atlantic 10), who still have a three-game series at home against Richmond remaining on their schedule, tied the program high set in 2002.
St. Bonaventure also won its seventh A-10 series of the season, claiming two out of the three games against the Owls, and stands in second place in the Atlantic 10, one-half game behind Rhode Island.
Sunday, Coach Larry Sudbrook's club had to overcome a 5-3 deficit in the final two innings. In the eighth, junior third baseman Matt Marduesz's bases-loaded ground out plated junior shortstop Josh Perkins to cut the Temple lead to 5-4.
Bonnies junior second baseman Kieran Malone led off the ninth with a double against Temple reliever Tim Foulkrod. With one out, pinch runner Kevin Suminski stole third base and came in to tie the game at 5-5 when Temple catcher Steve Mury's throw went into left field. St. Bonaventure then loaded the bases with one out and junior left fielder Joe Rizzo lifted a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore center fielder Randy Moley to make it 6-5.
Senior Matt Agostinelli pitched the final five innings for St. Bonaventure and allowed only two hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk. He remains unbeaten this season, now at 3-0. Foulkrod (1-8) took the loss.
The Owls (12-38/6-16) scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning against junior Eddie Williams.
Junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini recorded two of the Bonnies' seven hits on the day, finishing 2-4. Freshman catcher Brandon Salerno went 1-3 with two RBI. Agostinelli, who started the game at third base, went 1-4 at the plate.
The Bonnies will play their final non-conference game of the season on Monday when they visit LeMoyne at 3:00. The Richmond series, which will be played at Bona's McGraw-Jennings Field, begins on Thursday, May 18.
