ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
Sophomore Cody Vincent threw a complete game to lead St. Bonaventure to an 8-2 win over Richmond on Friday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
The Bonnies' win, coupled with Saint Louis' 5-1 win over Dayton (17-9) on Friday clinched second place in the Atlantic 10 for St. Bonaventure (18-7). The Bonnies still trail A-10 leader Rhode Island (18-6), which downed Massachusetts 5-4 on Friday, by a half game.
The Bonnies opened a 3-1 lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini made it 1-1 with an RBI single that scored sophomore center fielder Randy Moley, who had been hit by a pitch from Richmond's Alex Hale to lead off the inning. Junior left fielder Joe Rizzo then put the Bonnies ahead for good when he drove in Pellegrini with a triple. Senior third baseman Matt Agostinelli then executed a suicide squeeze bunt play that scored Rizzo.
The next inning, Moley extended the lead to 4-1 when he put down a suicide squeeze of his own to score junior second baseman Kieran Malone.
Richmond cut the lead to 4-2 with a run in the sixth inning, but St. Bonaventure junior designated hitter Matt Mardeusz ended any doubt as to the outcome with a grand slam off reliever Derek Duclos in the eighth.
Vincent threw his team-leading fourth complete game of the year and improved to 6-3. After a shaky start in which he gave up five hits over the first two innings, the southpaw limited the Spiders to just four hits the rest of the way. Vincent struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Vincent's effort pushed his total innings pitched this season to 85.1, a new school record.
Hale allowed only four hits over seven innings but suffered the loss to fall to 7-3. He walked two and hit another pair of Bona batters.
Rizzo finished 1-3 with one RBI and scored two runs. Moley also finished 1-3 with a run and an RBI.
St. Bonaventure improved to 26-18 overall and 18-7 in A-10 play, improving upon its school record Atlantic 10 wins. Richmond dropped to 21-33 overall and 11-15 in the A-10.
The final game of the series and of the regular season will be Saturday at noon. It will be Senior Day at McGraw-Jennings Field and the Bonnies' four seniors -- Agostinelli, Dan Bratys, Sean Bruet, John Zinnicker -- will be honored following the game with the traditional "last lap" around the McGraw-Jennings Field basepaths.
