Box Score
ST. BONAVENTURE, NY. -
Senior Matt Agostinelli's squeeze bunt play in the bottom of the eighth inning scored the winning run as St. Bonaventure topped Canisius 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
With the score knotted 5-5 in the eighth, junior Matt Marduesz broke from third base as Canisius pitcher Mark Sikorski delivered the pitch to home plate. With the runner only feet away, Agostinelli bunted the ball back toward the pitcher as Marduesz slid safely into home to give the Bonnies a 6-5 lead. St. Bonaventure's next batter added an insurance run, as sophomore center fielder Randy Moley singled down the left field line to score junior Kieran Malone from second to up the lead 7-5.
Moley finished the day 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, and Malone went 2-for-4 with a run plated. Junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini went 0-for-4 with a walk as his hit streak ended at 17 games.
Agostinelli came through for the Bonnies again in the top-half of the ninth inning by retiring three straight batters to earn his third save of the season. Sophomore Eddie Williams picked up the win despite walking in two runs in one-third of an inning to tie the score 5-5. The runs were charged to senior Sean Bruet, who gave up two runs on four hits in just over two innings of work. Bruet relieved starter Jim Britton in the sixth inning after Britton gave up three runs on five hits while recording four strike outs.
Williams improved to 4-3 on the year, while Sikorski fell to 1-2.
St. Bonaventure is now 20-16 overall on the year (12-5 Atlantic 10).
The Bonnies look to improve their A-10 standing this weekend, as they travel to Massachusetts for a three-game set. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, May 6.
