AMHERST, Mass. -- St. Bonaventure lost for the first time in ten conference games on Sunday, falling to Massachusetts 9-6 in the final game of an Atlantic 10 Conference series.
The Bonnies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Sophomore centerfielder Randy Moley singled to start the game, then was brought home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder T.J. Pennino. Junior shortstop Josh Perkins scored on a single by junior third baseman Matt Mardeusz after Perkins reached on a single of his own.
The fifth inning saw both teams bring in two runs. Junior Joe Rizzo doubled, then was brought home by a Mardeusz double. The double also brought home Pennino, who singled to follow Rizzo's double.
UMass countered when a Derrick Durepo sacrifice fly brought home Joe Cotone. Ryan Franczek doubled to bring in Travis Munsey.
UMass rushed to a three run advantage in the sixth, scoring five times. Andy Tuetken reached on a fielder's choice, plating Bryan Adamski, who also reached by fielder's choice. The Minutemen would tie the game on a Munsey single, which brought in Tuetken. Durepo followed with a double, bringing in two. Durepo then scored on a series of wild pitches by St. Bonaventure pitcher Eddie Williams.
Massachusetts would add two more runs in the eighth. Lou Proietti reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home Munsey and Cotone.
St. Bonaventure struck for two runs in the ninth. After junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini walked, junior outfielder Joe Rizzo homered to right field to pull the Bonnies to within three. Freshmen pitcher Jim Britton doubled and junior second baseman Kieran Malone walked, but that is as far as the Bonnies' rally would go.
Eddie Williams took the loss for the Bonnies, striking out 6 and allowing 7 runs. His record runs to 4-4. Bryan Adamski picked up the win in relief for UMass, pitching the final four innings.
St. Bonaventure is now 22-17 on the season and 14-6 in Atlantic 10 play. The Minutemen improve to 11-25 overall, including 9-12 in conference action.
The Bonnies are back in action May 12 when they visit Temple for a three game A-10 set. First pitch is slated for 3:30.
